Played in ideal conditions in Toome on Wednesday last, the Division 5 lads got their hands on the Division 5A league Cup after a tremendous game against Monaghan Harps. These sides have played twice already this year, each game being a ding dong battle. This game was no different and proved to be the best of the trilogy !! Monaghan were the better team in the first quarter, with the Fontenoys at times just hanging in there, and Harps shaded affairs at the water break by a goal. The second quarter continued in the same vain, but a late rally from the Donaghmoyne lads saw them squeeze ahead at the break by 1-7 to 1-5. Two evenly matched teams, with little between them surely meant an enjoyable 2nd half. What followed was a great exhibition by both teams, which ebbed and flowed. At different stages both teams seemed to have the game won before seemingly facing certain defeat a short time later. There were great saves by keepers, top class defending and majestic high fielding around the middle. To top it off there was chances, scores and goal mouth scrambles a plenty! At the end of a titanic struggle the Donaghmoyne lads came out on top by 2 points. This bunch of lads have been tremendous all season, playing great football , in the right spirit and with a never say die attitude. Mentors, parents and supporters were delighted and proud of these young Fontenoys on Wednesday night. They move on to Championship fare in 2 weeks with silverware safely tucked away in the trophy cabinet. We’ll done lads 🔴⚪️
