Gene first played for Donaghmoyne in 1960 Minor team who were beaten by Castleblayney in1960 Maguire cup semifinal. In the 1960’s Gene emigrated to the UK returning home in 1967. He won O’Duffy cup medals in 1969 and 1971 and a Hackett cup in 1971.
Retiring from playing he was elected to the chair in 1975 serving for two years, in 1991 he was again elected chairman. This term proved to be successful, serving with Assistant club treasurer the Late Margaret Markey they launched the Donaghmoyne GFC Lotto. On the football front Donaghmoyne reached the final of the Senior Championship in 1994 for the first time in 36 years. This was a very exciting time for the parish, with everyone involved doing their bit to support the team. Sadly, the team lost to a very strong Clontibret outfit by 1-11 to 4-7. The team was relegated in 1995 and the following year they were promoted, winning the Intermediate Championship and the Hugh Brady Cup.
During Gene’s term the club awarded medals to the Junior Team of 1948 who never received their medals due to post war shortages.
Gene has been greatly appreciative of the support given by his wife Dette and his Children Roisin and Gerard in his commitment to Donaghmoyne GFC.
